Lockdown Drill

Oak Grove School practiced their first lockdown drill today.  The students did a fantastic job!  As mandated by the state, we practice lockdown and evacuation (fire) drills every month.  At Oak Grove we focus on how these drills help us practice being safe in any emergency.  It is also an opportunity for students to show how well they listen to adults and how they can demonstrate respect for others by being helpful and kind.

Last year and again just this month we had a black bear roaming the neighborhood.  It was a great example to share with students as to why we may need to have a playground lockdown or be extra cautious about going to and from the building.  Some families have chosen to share information about world events and to have family discussions about other reasons why schools practice lockdown drills.  We respect the choices that parents make about what information they chose to share or not share with their children.

As an elementary school, we are choosing to focus not on the "what if" scenarios but on the practice of keeping safe and following directions.  If any of our students wishes to talk about something they have heard about in the news, as part of a family discussion, or in their community, we have steered them away from classroom conversations and given them opportunities to talk with our counselors as individuals or in small groups.  If you have concerns or would like help in talking with your child about the lockdown drills, please don't hesitate to call us.  We would be glad to help.

Parent & Principal Chat

Dear Parents and Families,

Each month I host a “Principal Chat” in our parent room before All School Sing.  These chats happen on the last Wednesday of each month from 8 – 8:30am.  Our parent room is upstairs near the grade 4 and 5 classrooms.  Our parent room is a place where parents can come to connect with another, have a cup of tea, read their email or check out information about our school community.  There are a lot of resources for families in the parent room and I hope you will use it.  The next chat is Wednesday, September 25 at 8:00am.  I plan on talking about our Grovies Positive Incentive program, but all topics are welcome.  I hope to see you there!

Homework Support

Dear Parents and Families,

Is your child in need of a little extra homework help?  We offer a lot of different supports at Oak Grove.  On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons we will be offering our Homework is Possible (HIP) club for students in grades 3-6.  HIP runs from 2:45 until 3:55 on each of these days and an adult is always on hand to help.  We also offer an Early Bird Homework Club on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:45 – 8:15 for students in all grades. Please ask your child’s teacher for details about either of these homework help possibilities.  Lastly, the Academic Support staff in grades 4-6 offers a homework support page on this blog site. Check it out!

Welcome Back!

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome Back!  We have had a fantastic start to our new school year.  Thank you to all of the parents and families who were able to attend our first day activities.  It was great to see so many familiar and new faces.  Although it is not an official full week, it feels like we are back and in the swing to our school year.  I hope you will make it part of your routine to be a part of the Oak Grove community.  Parents are welcome to attend events, read to students, work in the classrooms, come have lunch or however else you can envision being involved.

Our FROGS (Friends and Relatives of Oak Grove School) is our official parent group and a great way to get connected to the community.  Please contact our FROGS Coordinator, Heather Harrison, , to learn more about volunteer and parent opportunities at school and in the community.

Best wishes,

Jen Hemmingson
